The Scottish heat of the IOM3 Young Persons Lecture Competition took place on Weds 25th February 2026 at St. Andrews University.
From an unprecendented number of applications to take part, seven were chosen to take part in the competition.

The winners were:
- Angus Coyne-Grell (AFRC) "Controlling grain structure in Ni based superalloys without deformation"
- Benjamin Borchard (Strathclyde) "Material wear and erosion-corrosion: from the lab to the wider world"
- Benedek Nagy (Strathclyde) "Unconfined Compression Behaviour of Silty Sand treated with Fungus"
Angus Coyne-Grell will go forward to represent Scotland at the UK final held in London on 21st May
The competition was organised by the Mining Institute of Scotland with the support of the Scottish Association for Metals and sponsorship from the Mining Institute of Scotland Trust.
