Webinar: Value Retention in Manufacturing: Extending the Life of Metallic Products through Repair and Remanufacturing

Stephen Fitzpatrick, Director of the Digital Factory at the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland, University of Strathclyde and strategic lead on Remanufacturing, is the speaker at our next technical meeting to be held on Weds 25th March @ 6pm.

Stephen will talk about value retention in manufacturing by extending the life of metallic products through repair and remanufacturing.

Metallic products used in sectors such as aerospace, energy, transport and defence contain significant embedded value in the form of materials, energy and engineering effort. Increasingly, manufacturers are exploring how this value can be retained by extending product life through repair, reuse and remanufacturing.

This lecture will introduce the concept of value retention and explore how advanced repair and remanufacturing approaches can maximise the lifetime value of metallic products. Drawing on examples from the ReMake Value Retention Centre (RVRC) and other collaborations with industry, the session will examine opportunities across different metallic materials and component types, highlighting how material behaviour, degradation mechanisms and design considerations influence the feasibility of life extension.

The meeting is free of charge to all interested in engineering materials and related manufacturing technologies.  To register for this event, click here

Young Persons Lecture Competition

The Scottish heat of the IOM3 Young Persons Lecture Competition took place on Weds 25th February 2026 at St. Andrews University.

From an unprecendented number of applications to take part, seven were chosen to take part in the competition.

The winners were:
  1. Angus Coyne-Grell (AFRC) "Controlling grain structure in Ni based superalloys without deformation"
  2. Benjamin Borchard (Strathclyde)  "Material wear and erosion-corrosion: from the lab to the wider world"
  3. Benedek Nagy (Strathclyde)  "Unconfined Compression Behaviour of Silty Sand treated with Fungus"

Angus Coyne-Grell will go forward to represent Scotland at the UK final held in London on 21st May

The competition was organised by the Mining Institute of Scotland with the support of the Scottish Association for Metals and sponsorship from the Mining Institute of Scotland Trust.
