This year's Young Engineers Colloquium was held at the University of Strathclyde on Wednesday 9th September.
Forty (40) young engineers from across the central belt of Scotland gathered to hear short presentations from postgraduate students undertaking research into a wide range of engineering materials technologies and undergraduate students teams who spend their free time building and testing all types of vehicles - rockets, aeroplanes, boats and racing cars.
The postgraduate researchers had each recently presented papers at international conferences and treated the audience to an overview of their work. Research topics covered composite materials, welding and materials for space exploration.
The undergraduate teams had built and tested their vehicles at national or international events and spoke of their achievements and the latest developments in their vehicles. The spread of vehicles was impressive - cars, boats, planes and rockets were featured and we heard from the following teams:
- University of Glasgow Racing
- HYPED (University of Edinburgh Hyperloop Team)
- Strathclyde Aerospace Innovation Society
- University of Glasgow Aeronautics
- University of Strathclyde Motorsport
- Strathclyde Students for the Exploration and Development of Space
- Team Aero-Watt (Heriot Watt Aeronautical Society)
- Strathclyde Marine Robotics Society
- Glasgow University Rocketry
- Formula Student Team Napier
All of those taking part had received financial support from the Scottish Association for Metals grants schemes.
